Pilates Weights vs Dumbbells: Which is Better for Low Impact Exercise?
If you're building a home workout routine and wondering whether to invest in Pilates hand weights or traditional dumbbells, you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions we hear at DEWI — and the answer might surprise you.
Both have their place, but when it comes to low impact exercise like Pilates and barre, they are not created equal. Here's everything you need to know.
What's the Difference Between Pilates Weights and Dumbbells?
At first glance, they might look similar — both are handheld weights used to add resistance to exercise. But the design, weight range and intended use are quite different.
Pilates hand weights are typically light (1kg–3kg), compact and designed to be held comfortably throughout flowing, continuous movement sequences. They're balanced, smooth and easy to grip — even during arm circles, lateral raises and overhead movements that last several minutes at a time.
Dumbbells are designed for traditional strength training — heavier lifts, fewer reps, and exercises where you put the weight down between sets. They typically start at 2kg and go up to 40kg or more, and their shape is optimised for grip during static or explosive movements rather than sustained, graceful sequences.
Why Pilates Weights Win for Low Impact Exercise
1. They're Designed for Sustained Movement
In Pilates and barre, you might hold your arms at shoulder height for two to three minutes while performing small, controlled movements. A traditional dumbbell becomes uncomfortable very quickly in this position — the shape digs into your palm and the weight distribution feels off.
Pilates hand weights are designed to sit naturally in your hand during extended sequences, so you can focus on your form rather than your grip.
2. The Weight Range is Perfect for Toning
Low impact exercise is about endurance and control, not maximum load. Using a 2kg or 3kg weight for 60 reps of a barre sequence creates far more time under tension than lifting a 10kg dumbbell for 10 reps — and time under tension is what creates lean muscle tone.
Dumbbells in the 1kg–3kg range do exist, but they're often awkward in shape and not designed with Pilates movements in mind.
3. They're Safer for Joints
Low impact exercise is often chosen specifically to protect joints — whether you're recovering from injury, managing a condition, or simply prioritising longevity. Lighter, more manageable weights reduce the risk of compensating with momentum or straining stabilising muscles.
4. They Look and Feel Better
This might sound superficial, but it matters. When your workout equipment feels beautiful and intentional, you're more likely to use it. DEWI hand weights are designed to complement your practice — not just functionally, but aesthetically. They sit on your shelf looking like they belong there.
When Dumbbells Might Be the Better Choice
To be fair, dumbbells have their advantages in certain contexts:
- If you're doing traditional strength training alongside your Pilates practice and want one set of weights for both, a light dumbbell set might make sense.
- If you're significantly stronger and find 3kg too light even for Pilates, a slightly heavier dumbbell could bridge the gap.
- For exercises like deadlifts, rows or chest press, dumbbells are the appropriate tool.
But for a dedicated Pilates or barre practice? Hand weights are the clear winner.
